Pope這首詩在敘述十二世紀法國哲學家、神學家Peter Abelard與
他的學生Eloisa相戀的故事。當時Abelard已經四十歲而Eloisa只
有十八，後來Eloisa懷孕，並且不為她的家庭所接受，導致兩人
之後分開分別成為修士與修女。

這首詩是以Abelard與Eloisa之後在修道院中的書信往來為基礎寫
成的。"How happy..."那段主要講的是Eloisa對於自己心中始終忘
不了Abelard感到羞愧，卻又不斷想起那時候甜蜜的感覺。她說，
永遠保持貞潔的女神Vesta真是幸運，不受世間影響，遺世而獨立，
純潔的心靈中綻放著永恆的陽光，接受或拒絕世人的祈禱與願望。
